The Holy Communion
I Corinthians 11:24-27
And when he had given thanks, he broke (it), and said,
Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you:
this do in remembrance of me.
After the same manner also (he) took the cup, when he had supped, saying,
This cup is the New Testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink (it),
in remembrance of me.
For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink (this) cup,
ye do show the Lord’s death till he come.
Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread,
and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily,
shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.
The passage may somewhat seem simple, but it has a lot of meaning. Jesus died on the Cross of Calvary for sinners representing the practical message of John 3:16-17. The death of Jesus was God’s expression of love towards mankind. It speaks of grace, God’s mercy, forgiveness, and His ever loving kindnesses to His creation [Ephesians 2:1-4].
Therefore, the communion which symbolizes Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection should be one of the most important services in the Christian church. The reason is that Jesus first introduced this during the week of His death. When we partake of these emblems similar to the way we accept the anointing oil which has no power, but by faith we consider it as a point of contact with the Lord.
Why then, should be negate the communion or consider to be minimal and not necessary? Why do some ministers avoid this important aspect of Christianity? Seemingly, there are those who are not so interested in carrying out the communion service. Some leave it for the end of the service, and others may do it once in a while.
Yet Jesus said, “… This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. [Luke 22:19b].
The communion service should be one of the most important time in the Christian church, and use to be until the new age spirituality came into being. What used to be sacred and necessary has become outdated.
I pray that ministers will return to the old land-mark which identified Christianity, and re-institute the Holy Communion monthly in the church.
